Layton Gum Disease Treatment

Gum Disease Treatment | Davis Dental CareDo you have bad breath or do your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth? Bad breath, bleeding, and inflamed or sensitive gums are all indicators of a common condition known as periodontal (gum) disease.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gum disease affects about 65 percent of American adults. In older populations, this number increases.

Systemic Conditions and Gum Disease

The latest research links periodontal disease with numerous systemic problems such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, premature or low birth weight babies, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Many researchers believe that this connection is due to the inflammatory nature of periodontal disease and the negative impact of inflammation in the body.

Treating periodontal disease and keeping the infection under control can improve your overall health, your comfort, and your breath.

The Causes of Periodontal Disease

While some medical conditions, medications, and hormonal factors play a role in the health of our gums, the overwhelming cause of periodontal disease is neglect and improper dental hygiene. Your oral health can change over the course of your lifetime based on age, overall health, and certain conditions such as pregnancy. Adjusting your oral health routines to match your needs is something we take seriously here at Davis Dental Care.

Brushing your teeth at least twice daily, flossing every day, and staying on a regular dental cleaning schedule are the best actions to take to protect the health of your teeth and gums. Dr. Hans Smith works with patients to develop a personalized oral health care routine so you can achieve and maintain excellent oral health.

No matter what stage of periodontal disease you have, we always strive to provide gentle, thorough dental cleanings. Even if you have missed a few dental appointments, we will help you get back on track to a healthy smile!

In its early stages, called gingivitis, periodontal disease can often be reversed entirely with proper care. Dr. Smith will go over effective home care, a dental cleaning schedule, and any products that can assist with healing.

As periodontal disease progresses to a condition called periodontitis, you may require more focused treatment. At Davis Dental Care, we offer specialized dental cleanings that focus on removing the bacteria and infection from your gum tissue. We can even place a local antibiotic to assist with healing areas of deep pocketing between your teeth and gums. We may recommend more frequent dental cleanings – sometimes three to four times per year – and keep you on a preventive periodontal cleaning schedule.
