What Is the Difference between a CEREC Crown and a Traditional Crown?

CEREC Crown | Davis Dental Care

If you need a dental crown, sometimes all the choices available can feel a bit overwhelming. We are here to help you decide which route is best when it comes to the future of your smile.

Here are some points to consider when choosing a CEREC or traditional dental crown:

CEREC Crowns Are Durable

Our crowns are made to last, whether they are CEREC (in-office) or lab-created crowns. CEREC uses computer-aided design and manufacture to ensure a good fit, prolonging the life of your crown. Digital impressions often eliminate inaccuracies that are common with old-fashioned impression material.

CEREC Same-Day Crowns Require Only One Appointment

Our CEREC milling machine makes it possible for you to have your permanent crown in one appointment. Lab-created crowns can take a couple of weeks to complete, depending on the waiting period required for the lab to complete your case.

CEREC Crowns Are Made of Ceramic

Ceramic is strong and looks great! If, however, you require a full gold or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown (PFM), we may recommend a lab-created restoration to give you the best results.

When patients have a strong bite or excessive wear due to a misaligned bite, metal can provide better long-term results. If you are one of the people who could benefit from a gold or PFM crown, we will let you know and allow you to make the choice that works best for you.

CEREC Crowns Are Esthetic

CEREC same-day crowns look natural and are practical in most cases. If you need a crown on a front tooth and it needs to match its adjacent teeth perfectly, we may recommend a lab-created crown instead. When created by hand in a skilled lab, they can apply more nuanced detailing to get a better match.
