3 Reasons Why Straight Teeth Are Healthier Teeth

Reasons Why Straight Teeth Are Healthier Teeth | Davis Dental Care

Many patients have a wish to obtain the perfect smile, which often includes orthodontic treatment to correct the appearance of misalignment. Dr. Hans Smith understands that cosmetic dentistry is important, but we also approach orthodontics with your oral health in mind at our Layton dental office.

3 Reasons Why Straight Teeth Are Healthier Teeth

#1 – A Comfortable and Functional Bite

Misaligned teeth can lead to jaw problems and bruxism, or clenching and grinding. When your teeth do not come together properly, your jaws can strain, become sore, and lead to degeneration of the jaw joint, which can look like clicking, popping, and locking.

Clenching or grinding your teeth can lead to unnecessary wear. Poor occlusion, or a bad bite, is an attempt to self-correct to allow your jaw joints to come together comfortably. This may cause uneven wear and sensitivity in the teeth. It can also cause fractures, cracks, and infection.

#2 – More Effective Restorative Dentistry

If your teeth overlap or do not align properly, placing restorations such as crowns can be more complicated. Teeth that sit at odd angles or protrude may not have an esthetic appearance upon restoration. Additionally, if your bite fails to properly function, restorative dentistry may become prematurely damaged.

#3 – Home Care Maintenance

Brushing and flossing at home is more effective when teeth are not too close or too far apart. Properly aligned teeth are easier for you to keep clean at home and for us to professionally clean when you visit our dental office.
